Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Press freedom is a fundamental pillar of democracy, enabling journalists to investigate and report on critical issues without undue interference. Investigative journalism, in particular, thrives in environments where the press operates freely, allowing reporters to expose corruption, human rights abuses, and other societal ills (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). In Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State, the level of press freedom significantly influences the practice of investigative journalism. While Nigeria's constitution guarantees press freedom, journalists in Gombe face challenges such as political interference, restrictive laws, and harassment, which hinder their ability to report objectively and in-depth (Abubakar & Bello, 2024). Investigative journalism requires access to information, freedom to question authority, and protection from reprisals, yet these conditions are not always met. This study explores how press freedom impacts the quality and effectiveness of investigative journalism in Gombe, highlighting the need for structural and policy reforms.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Investigative journalism in Gombe faces numerous obstacles, including limited access to information, intimidation, and self-censorship due to fears of legal or physical repercussions (Oluwole, 2023). These challenges are exacerbated by the lack of strong institutional protections for journalists, undermining their ability to hold power to account. While press freedom is a constitutional right, its practical implementation in Gombe is fraught with difficulties, leading to gaps in the exposure of corruption, injustice, and human rights violations. This study examines the relationship between press freedom and the practice of investigative journalism in Gombe, seeking to understand the barriers and propose solutions for fostering a conducive environment for journalistic inquiry.
